Spread the cost of giving… and create a ‘gifts box’ to be proud of!
I know, you are probably all done with wrapping, shopping & giving – but it won’t last.
I hadn’t realised actually how many birthdays I had to think about in January – I’ve had 4 people to get gifts organised for! 2 of these nearly caught me out too, as I had completely forgotten about them.
Many years ago, I decided to start a ‘gift box’ as I am forever remembering its someone’s birthday at the last minute, with no or little time to get to the shops! I can then just go to my box, fetch out a suitable gift and I’m ready in no time – all whilst looking as if I am a lot more organised than I am!
Here’s a few tips on getting started. Take a large box, preferably one with a lid to keep things dust free, or a suitcase you don’t use much and line the base with bubble wrap. If you want to go to town, pop in some scented beads (choose a fragrance that could be masculine or feminine, such as vanilla or citrus). The scent with linger softly when your gifts get unwrapped later. Start by making a birthday list of those dates you know (and those you mustn’t miss!) and attach to the fridge or a household notice board. Keep an eye out for unusual gifts & cards whilst you are out and about. If someone pops into your head when you see a certain mug or print, chances are they would see your choice a thoughtful gift – you did after all, think instantly of that person. Get these gifts when you see them – you may not get the opportunity again and you will be so glad you did when that special birthday comes around. Generic gifts are a must for your box. There is always someone you want to say ‘Thank You’ to or give something nice to when they let it slip it’s their birthday! Keep in ‘stock’ for your box basics like a bottle of prosecco, long-dated chocolates and a nice hand cream or body lotion for the ladies and a small bottle of spirits, a nice masculine mug and a box of toffee for the guys. These are your ‘safe’ options for gifts and can come in handy at any time. Blank message cards, plain gift bags/wrap and tags that can be used for either sex are also a must. If you get time you can dress up plain wrapping with all sorts of decorations including ribbons, rustic string, acorns, pine cones and autumn leaves, pressed flowers or make flowers out of tissue paper.
Now, on to your more imaginative gifts. Gift bags with several small gifts on a theme never fail to delight. For example, stock one of our lovely dog scarves or cat scarf in navy or cream (£9.50) then a couple of mint tins or notepads (£3.50 and £6.50 respectively) with breeds of dogs or cats that friends may have, farm or country friends may appreciate our sheep scarf (£11.50) or fox bag (£19.99) horsey friends will love our beautiful bone china mugs from Gabriella Shaw, (variety of colours of horses available at £11.50), our horse tea towel (£10) or a gorgeous set of coasters (£10.95) of course, riding gloves (from £10) and stock pins (from £10.95) are also a lovely gift.
For your more special presents (Mother’s Day, best friend’s birthday etc), again buy those gifts when you see them or when you can afford them to spread the cost. And lastly, I know it has only just gone, but more and more people are shopping throughout the year for Christmas. The great thing about doing this is that when you get to December your hard-earned money can go towards the social side or the festive season – nights out, meeting friends for a meal, and the odd party outfit!
Hope our blog has brightened your day!
